Tasting Notes
This vintage, our Landslide Vineyard produced a wine that is youthful, elegant, and with a bright fruit character. Opaque and deep red with a vibrant ruby edge. The nose is very fruit-forward showing cassis, red plum, blackberry, cocoa, vanilla, baking spice, bay leaves, and toasty notes with hints of cedar. Inviting, fresh, and intriguing, this wine will continue to integrate flavors and aromas over time. On the palate, vibrant red berries, cassis, blackberry, and plum. Structured and elegant with balanced acidity. Fresh fruit on the entry followed by a broad mid-palate. Toasty, sweet oak frames the fruit and lends structure. The wine finishes with firm, ripe tannins and bittersweet cocoa. The acid balance makes this wine inviting, rich, and delicious. 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, 2% Malbec, 2% Tannat
Vineyard Notes
2015 was a great growing season for red varietals. A dry spring with very little rainfall set up an extended growing and ripening season with moderate daytime temperatures of 80–92˚F. Cool nights and foggy mornings made for a slow, gentle ripening. This vintage gave way to wines with strong varietal character, elegance, balance, aging potential, and Old World character. We began picking the fruit for this wine by hand on September 21 and finished on October 9. Our Brix at harvest ranged from 23.7 to 26.5 degrees.
Winemaker Notes
SIMI Landslide Cabernet Sauvignon reflects our dramatic estate vineyard in the Alexander Valley, where the fruit for this wine was grown. We blended in 10% Cabernet Franc to add an element of spice and cassis, and 5% Merlot to add softness and suppleness. Small amounts of Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Tannat add even more dimension to the aromatics and rich fruit flavors. During fermentation, the developing wine remained on the skins for 30 days to increase extraction and color. We followed this primary fermentation with malolactic fermentation for all the wine before aging it in small French oak barrels (56% new) for 24 months.
Food Pairing Notes
This Cabernet Sauvignon pairs beautifully with braised short ribs with salsa verde, tortellini with a Gorgonzola cream sauce, roasted duck with blackberry moustarda, or eggplant Parmesan with mushrooms and tomatoes.
