Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot, 3% Malbec, 1% Tannat

This vintage, our Landslide Vineyard produced a wine that is intensely seductive with an alluring balance of dark fruit to bright fruit. Opaque deep red with a vibrant ruby edge, this wine begins the seduction with sweet black cherry, cassis, plum, and blackberry fruit aromas along with dark roasted coffee, brown sugar, vanilla, and smoky mineral notes. Subtle wafts of violets, hints of cedar, and mint complete the aromatics. A brilliant and refined peppery spice adds interest. On the palate, dark berries, cassis, blackberries, and plums are enriched with roasted coffee accents. The entry is big, full, and rich, followed by a lush mid-palate and a toasty finish of caramel and hints of dark chocolate enveloping the fruit. A powerful and giving wine, with good concentration, weight, and length that keeps you going back for more.

Vineyard Notes
Millions of years of geological and seismic upheaval created our Landslide Vineyard, named for a slide so massive it changed the course of the Russian River. The river cut through the land and deposited the minerals, rock, clay, and loam that make up Landslide’s distinctive soil composition. The topography of this 170-acre vineyard, planted exclusively to red Bordeaux varietals, is so varied that we both view and farm it as three distinct blocks: Uplands (provide structure and density, inspiring a huge back-of-the-mouth sensation with high tannins); Midlands (producing powerful wines with more weight on the mid-palate and higher tannin levels); and Lowlands (wines produced from these blocks yield riper berry character with softer, more elegant tannin structure). Bud break, flowering, veraison, and harvest occur at different times within each of these sections. The nearby Pacific Ocean exerts its influence by bringing cool fog in the mornings and evenings to temper the warm days.
Winemaker Notes
SIMI Landslide Cabernet Sauvignon reflects our dramatic estate vineyard in the Alexander Valley where the fruit for this wine was grown. We blended in 4% Cabernet Franc to add an element of spice and cassis, and 5% Merlot to add softness and suppleness. Small amounts of Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Tannat add even more dimension to the aromatics and rich fruit flavors. During fermentation, the developing wine remained on the skins for 35 days to increase extraction and color. We followed this primary fermentation with malolactic fermentation for all of the wine before aging it in small French oak barrels (50% new) for 28 months.
Food Pairing Notes
This Cabernet Sauvignon pairs beautifully with venison chop and blackberry compote, roasted mushroom and caramelized onion linguine with balsamic reduction, or a grilled ribeye with plum moustarda.
Other Notes
The growing season began with a wet spring. Fortunately, rains stopped just as the grapevines were flowering. What followed was a luxuriously long growing and ripening season with moderate temperatures of 85°F to 92°F—just what we like to see in the Alexander Valley. The warm days, offset by cool nights and foggy mornings, are great for slow, gentle ripening and complex fruit expression in the Landslide Vineyard. We began picking the fruit for this wine by hand on October 20 and finished on October 23. Our Brix at harvest ranged broadly from 23.8 to 25.1°.

Purchased at the Wine Bin in Elllicott City, an absolutely great wine and value to celebrate the end of winter. Great nose, superbly smooth.
